There is also something to be said for being in a dying but profitable business. It keeps new entrants from entering the market. Who wants to start a business in a dying industry? Plus there are advertising restrictions which favor current tobacco players. This grants big tobacco a huge advantage.

Smoking rates are decreasing in America but not globally. Lorillard, part pf PM's competition has been increasing market share for years.
