The flip side is that any of the companies protesting these "patent trolls" would be quick to holler that their own patents are spun from the purest of gold and intentions.

Motorola used their patents as a form of extortion. They would approach competitors with a stack of patents and say, "Here are 300 pounds of patents that relate to your product. Some of them may apply. Some of them may not. But if you don't pay us protection money, we will sue you over all of them and make you defend."

Our patent system is broken so badly that it does not protect innovators or promote innovation. Instead, it protects litigators and promotes litigation.
