Lots can go wrong, when you choose a President who puts people in charge who can not figure out how to make smarter cuts than this.

He's not in charge. I think you must be falling for "the king" and "the dictator" crap that's going around.

Since we have a democracy he has to deal with the people's elected representatives, the pledges they made to the unelected Grover Norquist, people beholden to the Tea Party, etc.

So, instead of a system of "checks and balances," as the Founding Fathers envisioned, we have a simple system of "checks" and obstruction whenever the President and his political party try to be responsible.

The party of "No" brought us the debt ceiling debacle, and the credit downgrade that was explicitly grounded in their obtuseness. The "sequester" was something that was supposed to be so bad that both sides would finally have to work together to avoid it. But again, we have checks, but no balances.
