One of the problems of judging for oneself, of course, is that different people are impacted differently. In any environment where there is a low average upward shift in prices, the prices of some items and services will be climbing much more dramatically, perhaps because of shortages, while the price of other items and services will actually go down, perhaps because of surpluses or maturity of the product. Plus, people will make substitutions but some will consider the substitute equivalent while others will consider it inferior to what one had before. So, basing a sense of the CPI on one's own experience is far too limited.
