And if he does drive it, the kid (and the family) aren't insured.

That would be fine by me. If we were stupid enough to let him drive without being insured, then don't pay up if he gets in a wreck. However, we can give our neighbor's kid permission to drive the car on our insurance without paying more. As long as he has permission... So we can let another teen drive our car, but our teen who is a 13 hour drive from us and can't drive the car must pay insurance.

We did call our insurer to find out if we needed to put him on when he was learning to drive. Not needed then. You would think that would have been the time to tell us what was in our future.
