alstroemeria: The first three responses to your post came from, um, contributors whose cynical shouting down I long ago despaired of engaging and thus formally "ignored." But the more such contrarian noise your ideas generate, the better you're striking at the heart of the matter. I suspect that others are content merely to recommend because this is not an intellectually difficult argument. More comprehensive background checks were almost universally supported, included by the NRA, until corporate fundamentalists learned that unmitigated intransigence was a political asset. Their Congressional shills soon followed suit.

Every time the media refers to "winners" and "losers" on votes like the one last week, it's worth remembering that this is not a game. These are people's lives at stake, not tiny dents in someone's prospective bottom line.
