I'm trying to build my credit as a newlywed.
Is it bad for your credit score to maintain large balances on your credit cards, even though paid on time, rather than paying smaller, more frequent amounts?

No, however, it might be worthwhile to acquire several other cards where you do not charge them up so close to your Max Credit limit each month. Paying the full balance off each month is almost always the very best use of a credit Card.
