And we have abundant evidence that, left to their own devices, a very large share of middle class savers will make the wrong choices.

Why is that, do you suppose? Why are my husband and I (along with most here) so abnormal? It's not like our parents had lots of money and taught us how to invest--both families somewhat on the lower side of middle class. Not like our parents all went to college and were "professionals"--our moms went to college, dads did not.

Middle class indicates to me that these people are where we started--access to education, reasonably stable economic environment, no horrendous family issues. While I admit that we have had some very good luck over the years, we've also had to weather some difficult situations. And we've certainly made our share of poor investments. Maybe more people need to knuckle down and read, ask questions, do the math, do without the "wants", buy the cheapest reasonable house (instead of maxing out the credit line), practice making good decisions, etc., etc.
