I don't know what a "backdoor" Roth contribution is, but if funds are transferred from a traditional IRA to a Roth, that is a taxable event and does affect MAGI.

A backdoor Roth contribution is where you contribute to a non-deductible traditional IRA and then convert to a Roth IRA right away. It's a non-taxable event if you have no other traditional IRAs with taxable funds in it.
