I don't think the two are truely comparable.

If you prepare to ban guns, yes people go out and buy more guns and permits rise. Abortion isn't the same. You can't say "oh, they are going to ban abortions, I'll go have one before it's illegal". Heck remember the rush on Twinkies when they were about to go under?

As for the "they'll do it anyway" argument. That one I really hate. Why have speed limits? People are going to speed regardless of the limits. Why make drunk driving illegal? People do it anyway? Why have a drinking age of 21? People are just going to drink while underage.

The "they'd do it anyway" has always been my least favorite response because it doesn't get into whether or not people should be doing something, but whether they will.
