I agree with Rayvt that having too much cash is a drag on your portfolio. If you were in cash at the beginning of the year, you missed out on 18+% gain by the S&P500 on that money so far this year.

That said, I currently have about 2 years in cash as I'm about to retire shortly. The reason is partly psychological in that I don't want to get into that One-More-Year syndrome if the market drops before I retire. The main reason is that while I've charted out income and expenses, there are still some unknowns within my numbers, so I don't want to worry about where to pull out cash should I need a little more. Once my after-retirement cash flow settles out, I'll likely keep no more than 6-9 months in cash (dependent on dividend flow).
