LadyIanna, many real estate agents and mortgage brokers have opt-in features on their websites. IOW, you can engage their services in a limited way just by providing your email address.
For example, say you want to buy a house in Dane County, Wisconsin. If you visit this site and put in your email address, you'll receive an automated reply. An actual person may contact you via email once or twice to ask if you want to narrow your parameters, etc. But they're not going to spend a lot of time on you until you reach out to them as a serious buyer.

Seriously, when we relocated, first thing I did was bring up census info on the city we were moving to in order to get basic info on all the various suburbs. Went to realtor.com and zillow and a few other places to get listings...not that they were the most up-to-date, but to get IDEAS on what was available in what general price ranges in different areas. You can get general mortgage info from dozens of websites as CC notes.
Sending out random cold emails to get answers to questions is about as useful as making random cold calls in the hopes of getting an interview for a job...in other words, not very at all. And seriously, you can't call long distance without it being "expensive"? In this day and age? Guess what, if you're relocating to another part of the country, as other posters have pointed out, the cost of getting long distance on a cell phone or your landline is minimal compared to the overall costs of relocation. We're talking rounding error here.
