From 1950 to 1970 about 60% of the US population had jobs. We don't remember those years as being bad economically.


During those years wives were discouraged from working. In the 70's the price of housing rose so much that economic pressure trumped social pressure.

That's how I remember it, anyway.

Before about 1970, a middle class family frequently lived on one paycheck. Now it takes two or three paychecks to remain in the middle class, for most people.
