Temporary absences, such as away at college, count as time spent with the custodial parent.

Oops, I forgot another question that your comment raised: does a person under 24, not carrying a "full load" of classes, but living at home with parents, actually have a "custodial" parent? Aren't they a dependent as long as they can't claim themselves because someone else (parent they live with) is providing over 50% of their support?

I'm probably over-thinking this.
