France runs a multi-payer system that is UHC. It is rated #1 in the world in terms of providing healthcare. And it costs 40% LESS (per capita, in real terms) than what the per capita US cost is currently. Thus, it is the system that is broken in the US--otherwise, the US would be competitive in price as well.

Oh Gees, not another naive comparison between the US and a member state of the EU. If you can't see that this is an apples-to-oranges comparison, you need to consult an optometrist or maybe an ophthalmalogist about your chronic myopia. Healthcare is not universal in the EU. The EU government has done almost nothing to cause the cost of healthcare in the EU to rise. There is more healthy competition for governance within the EU. We should have been so lucky in the US, but we messed up badly. In this respect, we should become more like the EU, not like one of the member states of the EU. If MA and VT want to have single-payer systems, and can implement them without violating the constitutional rights of anyone, more power to them. Maybe they can convince the US government to stand aside so all states can have the system they want.
