I've been grappling with these issues lately and it gets even thornier when I read about early deaths - like the one here this morning of Karen Wheless. (She wasn't very old, I don't think?)
With a modest lifestyle, I could retire now. In 20 months, I can retire with a reasonably comfortable lifestyle. In 56 months, I can retire very securely and comfortably.
My financial geek friends think I am crazy to retire before 56 months - at that point, I will have employer-subsidized healthcare in retirement.
That said, I have been thinking of a compromise plan between pulling the plug now versus pulling it later - the compromise being to step up my bucket list spending now - using the resources I have always squirreled away - vacation time and money.
You all are so right - these habits become so ingrained.
