Most people whose parents could not pay for their tuition would not be able to earn enough to support themselves and pay tuition at today's rates even at universities with lower costs.
It wasn't that much different in 1962-67. Min wage was $1.15 raised to $1.25.
Student loans were almost unheard of. It wasn't easy to work and go to school back then either. I imagine there was not a bigger percent working and going to school than there is today. It would be interesting to know. Median and low income folks just couldn't go to college.
