One should not go to university or college if one needs to borrow in order to pay for it.

That's about as dumb a statement as any I've ever seen.

I remember after paying off a $25K medical school loan getting a letter from the bank congratulating me for repaying a loan taken out for "what we think is the single best reason for borrowing money."

I grew up in a lower-middle class family. Without loans, I never would have been able to afford med school. 17 more months and it will be paid in full.

And that would have been a loss for rural health care. Loans are useful if taken thoughtfully.
