My experience kind of mirrors yours over the same time period. I'm not entirely sure where you're getting 2 bear markets ... though I suppose most people include the EU crisis and flash crash. I was in the black in 2004, though my wife's debts offset most of that. So I took a big hit getting divorced that year. My finances have soared since with only a small hiccup in '08 & '09 when the markets were down and I was unemployed.
