The Fool: What do you fear most?
TMFSelena: Sickness. Poverty. Loneliness.
The Fool: Make a confession.
TMFSelena: I watch Sesame Street sometimes, even though I have no children.
The Fool: What's your biggest pet peeve?
TMFSelena: Clouds of black exhaust spewing from buses and trucks. Makes me crazy. Why bother with emission control of automobiles when such a big chunk of traffic is allowed to darken the sky and my lungs?
The Fool: What's the best restaurant you've ever been to? (Include name and location!)
TMFSelena: Bouley, New York City. Even the parsley was amazing. (I also enjoy original crunchy tacos at Taco Bell... my tastes in tastes cover a wide spectrum.)
The Fool: What's your greatest athletic achievement? Little League champ? Ran a marathon? Did 4 consecutive sit-ups?
TMFSelena: I placed third in a Judo Tournament. (Of course, there were only three others in my division.)
The Fool: Have you had a brush with fame, the proverbial '15 minutes'? Tell us about it.
TMFSelena: I once met Idi Amin in an elevator in Kenya. He seemed nice enough at the time. (I was 10.)
The Fool: Share with us your best money-saving secret. Do you cut coupons? Bring your own candy bars to movies? Shop on Wednesday and pretend you're over 65?
TMFSelena: I don't smoke and I rarely buy drinks (liquor or soda). I probably save a lot by not doing drugs, too.
The Fool: What technology do you wish the world had but doesn't yet?
TMFSelena: Radios that display the song title and artist name. (I gather, though, that this now exists, via satellite radio. Hooray!) Cheap but powerful computers that run without inexplicable and frequent crashes and error messages.
The Fool: What product would you like the Fool to offer and why?
TMFSelena: Fried chicken. Because most people like it and it would probably sell well.
The Fool: Briefly review your favorite book.
TMFSelena: Ooh... can I just list a bunch of great ones?<br /><br />A Fine Balance (Rohinton Mistry), A Suitable Boy (Vikram Seth), Lonesome Dove (Larry McMurtry), The Passion (Jeanette Winterson), Fingersmith (Sarah Waters), Ladies' No. 1 Detective Agency (Alexander McCall Smith), Midnight's Children (Salman Rushdie), Their Eyes Were Watching God (Zora Neale Hurston), Song of Solomon (Toni Morrison), The Bone People (Keri Hulme), Middlesex (Jeffrey Eugenides), A House for Mr. Biswas (V.S. Naipaul), The Shipping News (E. Annie Proulx), Cider House Rules (John Irving), Traveling Mercies (Annie Lamott), Life and Death in Shanghai (Nien Cheng), Corelli's Mandolin (Louis De Bernieres), Shibumi (Trevanian), Harriet the Spy (Louise Fitzhugh), The Pushcart War (Jean Merrill), The Sparrow (Mary Doria Russell -- also check out the sequel, Children of God)...<br /><br />Also, fun mystery authors: Liza Cody, Lindsey Davis, Janet Evanovich, Robert Parker, Kathleen Taylor, Tony Hillerman
The Fool: Tell us about your greatest personal success, not necessarily finance related.
TMFSelena: -- I started an e-mail discussion group ("mailing list") for people who grew up where I did, and nearly eight years later, we now have about 650 people.<br /><br />-- I drew a weekly cartoon about broken photocopiers for two years<br /><br />-- I survived and enjoyed teaching in a public high school for two years
The Fool: Okay Gilligan (or Ginger), you're stuck on a deserted island. What one material possession would you hope to have with you?
TMFSelena: a food court<br /><br />(also, a library and online access)<br /><br />I guess that's really three things. So I'll make my one thing a small town that features a food court, a nice public library, and online access.
The Fool: Worst or best vacation?
TMFSelena: One of the most unusual was a family vacation in Prague, Czechoslovakia -- in August of 1968. The invasion of Warsaw Pact troops took sightseeing off the agenda and made it difficult to depart, too.
The Fool: OK, your favorite non-financial website? (Type URL with http:// to activate.)
TMFSelena: Well, there's my modest little message board, at: http://boards.fool.com/Messages.asp?bid=113060<br /><br />And then there are:<br />http://www.half.com<br />http://www.amazon.com<br />http://www.theonion.com<br />http://www.best.com/~yylee/homespun/booktop.html<br />http://www.berkshirehathaway.com/letters/letters.html<br />http://www.natpresch.org/ssermon.htm<br />http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html<br />http://www.tvtattle.com<br />http://www.salon.com<br />http://aldaily.com<br />http://www.straightdope.com<br />http://www.funagain.com<br />http://www.boardgamegeek.com
