A bunch of funny coincidences.

The offending text is on line 1

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected 'version' (T_STRING) in /home/username/public_html/product/index.php on line 1

which means that since there is no "<?php" prior to it, php does not recognize

// or /* xxx */

because it's not yet in php mode.

If you insert "<?php" before the xml line, "/* xxx */" will work but "//" won't because php will recognize "?>" at the end of the line as ending php.
