We are fortunate in the United States to have so many college options available. Most countries have fewer colleges per capita. In addition, some major industrialized nations have a few elite institutions and not much else worth attending. In Japan, if you are able to get into and graduate from Tokyo University, your will be able to gain entry to top graduate schools and prestigous employers. The United States has over 3,000 colleges that grant four year degrees. Only about 25 (less than 1.0%) are extremely selective (accepting less than 25% of applicants). Another 50 or so accept between 26% and 50%. On the other end of the scale, 41 schools accept any applicant who applies.
