A friend of ours is now a paint sales rep but formerly a really good painter. He looks for people to be on time, attentive to detail (if they notice "wow, those gutters need to be taped off carefully!" or whatever, major plus!), and careful with quality. If they're trying to talk you into the latest and greatest, be more cautious. Sorry I don't have more advice, said friend did our paint for us so we were spared the interview process, but he did give some ideas. Another thought... maybe talk to the paint sales reps and see if they recommend someone??? (might have to go through a contractor for this though)
