A lot of houses & apartment buildings are not designed well for being comfortable in the summer or easy to keep warm in the winter (which would vary by climate). It's like after a/c got more common, they forgot how much of a difference it can make in the summer when there's good air circulation, or a porch, or awnings over some of the windows. Sometimes those little old houses can be pretty comfortable (and of course, sometimes not.)There are a lot of 2 bedroom houses that were built right after WWII that run about 900 - 1100 s.f. & even after the owners have finished the attic or added on, it's pretty small compared to what's being built now. So, a lot more house to heat, and I wonder if people actually use the "great rooms" that much. - dove
