A lot of people are put off when they look down from the plane on approach to Kona and see mostly lava from the plane. That's good. It keeps the crowds down.

Dig deep. There's loads of stuff to do on the big island. Loads. Volcano is minor. Interesting, but minor.

If you can, rent a 4x4. Ignore the warning about not going Saddle Road.... it gets you to the turn-off up to the observatory. Drop dead spectacular.

Reallllly nice beach is at Mauna Kea Hotel. There's a free public lot right by the hotel. Another nice beach just south of Mauna Kea is Hapuna. Just south of Hapuna, Puako Road is a neat drive with walk thru's to a bunch of realllllly good beaches with reallly good snorkeling, but you gotta know which houses to walk between. Hotel boats come anchor at the good spots, but there's plenty spots close to beach.

Just south of Hapuna is the road up to Waikoloa Market in the village. Great selection of poke and deli for picnic at beach.

Just south of that is anaehoomalu bay... cool ancient fish ponds, petroglyphs and nice beach too.

Just south of the airport is Honokohau Marina. Good fish in a low key atmosphere at the Harbor House, with a view of the fishing boats.

Just south of that is my sister in laws driving range and batting cages.

That's just the tip of the iceburger between Kona and MaunaKea.

http://www.samchoy.com/ has good eats in Kona.

Just north of Mauna Kea Hotel is Kawaihae Harbor.

Kohala Divers has the shortest boat ride to some great dive/snorkel spots up that way. Currents can rip up Kohala way... best to go with the people who know. Also, around the harbor Pesto has good pizza, and Harbor Grill has some good stuff.
