A more subtle, though perhaps less truthful, way to do this might be to tell him a story about some poor guy you know who is going through a really bad time because his dad was suddenly taken and the family now, in its grief, has to sort through everything, and can't believe how much the lawyers are costing just to figure it out, let alone deal with the paperwork, and would you believe the taxes, they're telling him they'll have to sell the country house where they used to spend the summers....
