I’m sure many of you have seen pictures of the devastation in Texas and Louisiana right now as Hurricane Harvey has made first landfall and prepares to hit the region again. The Motley Fool Foolanthropy team has been watching the situation closely and is looking for ways that Fools can help.

If you’re looking for places to donate money, Motley Fool Foolanthropy recommends supporting All Hands Volunteers, a disaster relief nonprofit that operates within small communities (and with big partners like the Red Cross) to restore and rebuild, not just in the immediate aftermath, but in the months and years to come. All Hands is highly vetted and recommended (4/4 Stars on Charity Navigator) spending nearly 88% of your contributions on program services.

All Hands received over 1,000 volunteer application in the first 24 hours, and the Rapid Response team is pulling in additional staff for what they expect will be the largest relief project ever undertaken. They are setting up their first Volunteer Reception Center at the request of Corpus Christi, with more expected across the Houston area. Once officials allow access, All Hands plans to spread out across the Fort Bend and Harris County areas, helping homeowners assess their damage and connecting them to the resources they need.

The massive scale of the damage -- in the face of low numbers of insured and limited federal and state resources -- makes it clear our flood repair experience and volunteer labor capacity will be needed to help homeowners rebuild. -- All Hands Volunteers

We’re hoping to raise $10,000 for All Hands in the next week to help with their flood relief efforts. And the Morgridge Family Foundation has announced they will match the next $50,000 donated to All Hands will be matched dollar for dollar, so your generosity can have twice the power!

Motley Fool Foolanthropy is also at the beginning stages of organizing an in-person relief effort. Tentatively, interested Fools who can make their way to Houston area (time and date TBD) will receive local hosting and training so that they can make a hands-on difference. If you are interested, fill out this form and you will be contacted at a later date:

The Foolanthropy response so far in just 24 hours has been amazing and I hope you will join me in supporting this most important effort.

Who notes he has family that lives in the greater Houston area (they are OK, thankfully), but he also learned that he has a remote office co-worker who lost her home, escaping with only a duffel bag, and he bets you have connections and stories too...
