A wash sale occurs when a stock is sold for a capital loss and the purchase and sale occur within a 31 day period of time. In order to realize the loss you would have to buy the stock again, hold for at least 31 days, and then sell it.Bob I don't understand this need to purchase another lot of shares to realize the loss.A wash sale situation is created by the presence of a second set of shares. Specifically,a second set of shares purchased within a 30-day window of a loss-yielding transaction. If the second set of shares create a wash situation, well, ... that means there's a third set ofshares involved.
