AARP is not expensive to join, but join mostly if you want to take advantage of their services--

1. Magazine has a few good articles but tends to be aimed at golden age seniors, not at the retire early crowd.

2. Insurance program: their rates are not particularly low. You are paying to get on their mailing list.

3. Political action committee: They represent senior issues before Congress and in state legislatures. They like contributions and activists to voluteer time, march, demonstrate, etc. But their approach tends to be a bit liberal. It is quite a bit left of protecting Social Security.
