After all, it was my impulse spending habits that got me in this trouble in the first place. And even though I'm older and wiser now, I don't trust myself with that plastic in my purse. However, I 'own' a very unreliable car and would feel most comfortable keeping a back-up plan if it ever were to go kaput.

You said you kept the card with the highest limit. What's the limit on the card? If you don't trust yourself, lower the limit to reduce the amount of trouble you can get yourself into. When I had a less than reliable car, I found most repairs came in under $1000.
