After doing mine myself - twice - and not being pleased with the results we called in a pro.

I thought it would look strange only doing the big sliding glass door in the kitchen without doing others on that side of the house. To make my decision, I had the guy tape up some film so I could go outside & look to judge how it would look with only that window tinted. It looked fine since it's a door and not a window - looked normal enough.

We went with a commercial reflective film. Cost was about the same for materials, this was the darkest, and the guy said it was a better grade of material that would hold up longer for that application (you have to consider how often you are in contact with the glass on a sliding door vs a window).

On the front of the house the big window over the entryway cracked diagonally. The guy said it had nothing to do with being tinted, but I think it's odd that the window just cracked on its own shortly after tinting. I think it's from applying reflective/mirrored tint to the inside pane of the glass creating too much heat between the 2 panes and very close proximity of a HVAC register.

After having this project completed, I'd have to recommend smoke vs mirrored finish although for what you want to do, mirrored will give better results. We wanted the mirrored for privacy and most light blocked - our front door has the small windows all the way around it & we don't like people looking in. At night, the mirror effect works in reverse if lights are on inside, so everyone can see in but we can't see out.
