Alibaba blows past estimates

Alibaba's stock is up by over 81 percent this year, lifted by steady increases in revenue for its commerce business and strong growth in its cloud computing and entertainment units, even as investments in offline stores are yet to pay off.

Had a look and the numbers were spectacular but so many moving parts. I did see one analyst say cloud was only up 100%, a slight disappointment. 1. Jack Ma, management 2. they think long term. Different businesses for the most part from Bezos and Amazon, but that's about all that ever matters. Investing thesis, focus outside the US until the issues with Herr Trump are resolved.

What it takes to grow Canada’s national nest egg
As head of the massive Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, Mark Wiseman is having to take bigger bets and bigger risks to ensure the pension fund keeps growing
October 28, 2015
....In fact, over the last decade the CPPIB’s assets under management have grown faster than both Berkshire’s total assets and share price.

In 2011, Canada’s pension fund manager invested in a relatively obscure Chinese e-commerce company called Alibaba. It did so again in 2012, and then pushed its total investment to US$314.5 million by purchasing shares when Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. completed the richest initial public offering in history in September 2014. The value of the company’s shares have tumbled since, as traders question the strength of China’s economy. Still, Alibaba’s shares are worth nearly US$200 billion, more than Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Wiseman says CPPIB’s wager on Alibaba has earned it more than $1 billion.

Of course since then the Canadians have absolutely killed it with their early investments in BABA. And the rest. private equity, public equity, bonds, real estate. Let's face it, the Canadians with their inexpensive universal healthcare and fully funded (real assets) government pensions are just way smarter than Americans. No shame in that. Americans are busy getting the statues issue resolved. It's all good! Congrats to the Canadian socialists.

Americans and Herr Trump have more important matters to deal with than healthcare and pensions.
