All that is needed is for reasonable people to try to find solutions. We will never stop all madmen but if we can stop a few of them or even one, or if we can even reduce the body count the efforts will be worth it.

Well, until you actually look at the other side of the equation: how many times guns (even "assault weapons") are used in defensive gun uses per year in this country.

It's a hard number to pin down because A. most of the time the incidents aren't reported, B. when they are reported they don't make the news and C. there's no database that tracks even those that are reported/make the news. However estimates have run from 100,000 DGU's per year (Clinton era Justice Department estimate, and Clinton's DOJ was hardly a "pro-gun" outfit) to over 2 million (a scientific study done by a Criminologist named Kleck, which is controversial but it exists.)

So it's fair to say that the number of defensive gun uses dwarfs the number of people killed by guns in this country every year even at the very low estimate (100,000 vs. 30,000) and at the high estimate it isn't even in the same ball park (2,000,000 vs. 30,000).

Until the gun-grabbers are even willing to ACKNOWLEDGE that this other side of the equation exists there really can't be any productive dialogue on the subject.
