Along with the Drought Monitor, my favorite indicator is the Soil Moisture Anomaly.

The nation's breadbasket -- the entire Great Plains area -- has low soil moisture, lacking up to -160 mm (-6.3"). The worst area is in OK and north TX, the same area as the Dust Bowl of the 1930s.
