Also, keep in mind that census-takers back then were likely not well-educated and spelling was not a priority, making for more headaches.

And, as people migrated west and south, there was less record-keeping being done because many of the locations were barely settled. People died and were simply buried on the property. Children were born at home and no record, other than possibly a bible reference, was made. My mother, born in 1917 at home in Central Texas, never had a birth certificate. I actually suspect her birthdate may be incorrect, but no possible way to prove it and it actually makes little difference.
