Also keep in mind that the channels (ie apps) for Roku get updated on a regular basis, and new ones get added all the time. The ones included in "Smart" TVs are usually (1) lower quality, (2) rarely updated, and (3) limited in number. Same for the apps in other devices, like Blu-Ray players.

The downside to Chromecast is that it's only a "player". The source for the Chromecast is your mobile device or browser (maybe). So if you're streaming a movie from your device, you can't leave the room or do anything else (with some limited exceptions). A Roku is it's own source device - it just needs an internet connection to work.

I have a couple AppleTVs and a Roku. I mostly use the AppleTVs, because most of my content is in various iTunes libraries, or Netflix. We do use the Roku for Amazon content. The Roku would be my first choice if I had the content stored elsewhere (like in Plex) and didn't have any iTunes purchased content (which the Roku can't play).

Totally agree except in my case I have never utilized iTunes content (movies are too $$$ compared to other sources such as Vudu and I'm not a music person).
