Although I do agree that one should check into both options, here is a quote taken from BuyandHold's page:

Fees charged to execute your purchase or sale order. Commissions are taken into account when calculation a realized gain or loss. At, all purchase or sale orders cost $2.99 in commissions - a remarkably low rate. reinvests dividends on behalf of its customers at no additional cost. Certain other Optional Services may be subject to additional fees.

I personally think it's a great deal that they only charge for direct buys and sells of shares. (Not the "DRiP"py part.)

Another potential drawback is that if you don't make a least 5 commission generating transactions a year, they charge an additional "maintenance" fee. ($15/yr)

On a side note, I set up small accounts for my kids (ages 7 & 8), and let them have free range of where they put the money. This gives them a tremendous learning opportunity that they wouldn't be able to get by only "watching" me, as they have made their own "fortunes" and suffered through their own losses. They love it.
