We filed amended joint returns for tax years 2010 and 2011 on June 20, 2012, previously filing individual returns. Substantial refunds are due to us.

The IRS acknowledged the receipt of both returns a few weeks after they were filed.

Since then we have been receiving regular form letters (LTR26444C) from IRS stating that due to heavy workload they have not completed their investigations and seeking additional 45 days. There is a phone number provided, but I have not called them expecting it to be futile.

Does anyone have experience with delays in processing of amended returns.

Is such a long delay unusual?

Can I do anything to nudge them into expediting the processing?

Thanks for you response in advance.
