amiablejak, thanks much for your ideas! Thought I'd give a little update.

I ended up getting a rectangular black scarf thing plus another scarf (frilly) and a hat thing (not as pretty, but more practical I think). I wasn't able to give it to her as discreetly as I wanted, but decided to just give her "first choice." She picked the pretty black scarf thing (it was also the one I liked the best) and I left it up to her/the others to split the other two items.

This young woman's very quiet and subdued in general and when I gave it to her, she responded as usual, but she did seem to really like the scarf itself (playing with it a bit, etc., but not yet wearing it).
