An electronic return was accepted by IRS and now must be amended to remove a dependent. The dependent will need to file claiming her own exemption. Should the 1040X be filed after the refund is received or can it be mailed in now? When can the dependent file claiming herself? Should her return should be mailed as well since her SSN is already received by IRS as a dependent?

If you have an acknowledgement that the return was accepted, go ahead and file the amended return. The "former dependent" should file on paper, since it could be some time before the amended return is processed.
