To Chris Stevens and all US citizens who work in very dangerous conditions:

Having worked for the US government in a couple of dangerous countries, I have an appreciation of what all of you live with on a daily basis. There is little recognition for your hard work and almost no recognition of the dangers you face. Almost every person I've known in countries like these don't do it for the money or any potential recognition. The countries I'm talking about don't get the high profile ambassadors who receive their appointments due to some political favor or donation. The countries I'm talking about are almost always manned by senior foriegn service officers and their staffs. No one ever hears about them unless something goes terribly wrong and then the people affected aren't even the focus of the news.

The Foreign Service and agencies like USAID are in VERY dangerous countries around the world, doing their best to represent the United States and help the people of those countries in any way they can. They live and work in places that see armed conflict on a weekly and sometimes even daily basis. They sometimes spend days or even weeks holed up in "safe areas" waiting for some military action to end and hoping that no bombs end up in their laps. After which they go right back to doing their jobs.

As a nation we revere those who serve in the military defending our way of life but we often forget that others serve in dangerous situations without any attention. No one thanks them "for their service" because they don't wear a uniform to give away their position. They don't advertise the fact that they live and work in places where no rational person would stay. They don't tell their neighbors how difficult and dangerous their lives can be when they return to the states.

If you know any of these people, please let them know that their service is appreciated. They are "fighting" for their country just as those in the military do. They just do it without the weapons.
