An S&P 500 Index fund is an excellent place to begin investing. They tend to be low cost funds and often out perform more expensive managed funds. In addition to mutual funds you can also find 500 Index etfs such as Spyders, ticker SPY.

For a wider range of stocks you can consider total market funds, Russel 2000, Wilshire 5000 funds. Or even the Nasdaq 100, "cubes" or ticker QQQQ.

As to small cap stocks, there are lots to choose from. People are excited about 3D printing. You will find a discussion board on them in Fooldom. But 3D Systems (ticker DDD) is probably the best established company.

The new IPO companies make the news. Twitter, Yelp, Facebook, Linkd, Tesla, and more. But the old line ebay, Amazon, Google, Apple are still out there.

Do your research before you decide. You will find lots more suggestions by looking at people's CAPs portfolios.
