and as for child support, I believe there should be mechanisms in place to ensure that any support in excess of some substantial living income (say $70Kish) go to the child. We regularly see awards in excess of $10k/mo. In some cases as much as 7 figures annually. While I can't speak for Warren Sapp, most fathers I know who pay child support also pay far in excess of that support for direct child care. Yeah, there are some crappy people out there who don't but that doesn't preclude a just system that ensures that the purpose of child support is met.
Yes, it's totally insane. Alimony and child support laws reward the less industrious parent and pervert the incentives for marriage and parenthood. There's a reasonable amount of child support/alimony which should not vary based on the income of the payer.
The results of the current system are pretty ugly - high rates of divorce and out-of-wedlock births. Sapp likely bears significant responsibility for fathering children by several mothers. On the other hand, I would predict that a less lavish system of child support/alimony would have resulted in fewer children in such situations.
While this is a controversial topic, it is relevant to this board since it is a serous problem for professional athletes.
