and I agree with Quillnpenn about avoiding the direct investing. It'll be a headache later when you have various tiny accounts scattered among different companies instead of all at one broker.

If the small commission charge at a discount broker is so large compared to your principal that you're thinking about direct investing it's probably a good sign that you need to build your principal up rather than go the direct investing route.
