Android is devouring the tablet consumers who just need a base tablet with little in the way of custom apps. But the iPad's app advantage is only increasing and pushing deeper into niches and custom applications. Exactly the sort of vertical uses that are expensive to replicate and which get entrenched into business processes

There really are two separate tablet markets: 1) low-level consumer consumption, and 2) use of tablet for sophisticated apps, many uses of which are really completely new categories of computer-assisted activities. To understand #2, it would be very helpful to go to and peruse the examples of iPad uses in business and education. People who focus only on using tablets to surf the web or watch videos or even manage documents and spreadsheets are missing the really exciting future in store for tablets.

iPad is the best device for #1, for those who can afford it...especially the new Retina Mini and the iPad Air.

Yet it is category #2 in which iPad is establishing a very formidable moat. This market has a very reasonable chance of ending up like Microsoft/Windows in the enterprise sphere, namely a highly entrenched position and very long run of success, virtually immune from competition.

So don't let all the headlines of "iPad losing market share" scare you. On the other hand, if you start seeing other tablets being used for sophisticated tablet uses, especially that category of completely-new-computing-paradigms, then it may be time to be more concerned.
