Android is from Google. The easiest way to enter anything is from your PC. Log into your gmail, and below where it says "google" it will say "gmail". There's a little pull-down arrow that will let you select "contacts". Then you can type in anyone you want.

It should have synchronized with your gmail already, so any gmail contacts should already be in your phone.

My phone is running gingerbread. I suspect you have at least ICS if not jellybean. So I wouldn't want to tell you how to do it on the phone only to find out it's different on jellybean than on gingerbread. On mine I just open the dialer, and at the top it has contacts tab. Once in contacts I hit the menu at the bottom of the phone screen, and "new contact" is a choice.

But it's easier from the PC.
