Our "liberal" friends have a real hard time with this. Perhaps the framing is a bit off. I'm thinking I like the following better: Some of us think America is a large part of the problem. Others of us think America as she is right now is the last best hope of mankind. The more I ponder this, the more I think that this is the front line in our culture war.

Why did you put 'liberal' in quotes? You suspect we aren't really liberal?

The only person who has a hard time with liberals as loyal Americans appears to be you. We have no trouble ourselves.

I love America kind of like I love my husband. I adore them both, but I know sometimes they get something sub-optimally or even quite wrong. I know you agree with this as you seem apoplectic over the things you think America gets wrong--like electing President Obama.

I put "liberal" in quotes for the same reason "liberal" means conservative in England. Look it up.

You are making my point. Do you think your husband is a beacon of hope unto the world, the last best hope of mankind?

America is the current best hope for mankind. I don't claim to predict the future by calling it the last such hope. I suspect if the tea party holds sway, we'll fall into also-ran status while we become another failed theocracy with the lion's share of public education funding going into the pockets of for-profit school owners, the middle class carrying the load for the 1%, dirty coal pollutes our air, no holds barred in soil and water pollution...

=alstro, live from the jury assembly room in my county. What are you doing for America today?

America is the current best hope for mankind.

So you don't think we're part of the problem, then? So you disagree with our Fraud in Chief when he says we need fundamental transformation? So you voted for Romney?

YEs they are there, I just finished reading one.

These are not good people.

It's worse than that. They look forward to our being cut down to size. They want to help the process along.

Speaking of which, Georgia passed the Charter School amendment in this last election, funded by big money and I think ALEC. Now the state can take money away from school districts and pump it into charter schools. I think you are looking at Georgia's educational status going down over time because the poorest school districts will suffer, especially rural. We had an excellent Georgia Governor who finished his term in 2003. "His education reform measures included eliminating tenure for newly hired teachers and ending social promotion by requiring students to pass a test before advancing to the next grade. He also set up Georgia's Child Advocate Office and signed the Terrell Peterson Act to protect children at risk." (wikipedia)

It has been downhill for education ever since then.
