Any advice on what to look for in a first card and/or a solid way to build credit?Do you belong to a credit union? Credit unions are often very nice about handing out credit cards to their members.Back when I first tried to get a credit card I took out a line of credit from my credit union (which was a very large one that was somewhat picky about handing out credit cards) and paid it back over a period of three months. I was very honest with the loan officer: I told her I was trying to build credit, and since I had more in my account than I was asking for, the loan was granted. Then I applied for Sears and Macy's, and then I got the Visa.Or you could ask about a secured card. In this case you essentially hand over the money ahead of time, so you would ask for a small amount: $500.00 or so.Nancy
