AppleCare for iOS devices lasts for two years. If you have the latest version of the iPad, it's impossible for AppleCare to be expired. Even if you bought one the very first day it was available, it would still be covered by the original warranty. And if you bought AppleCare, it would be covered until at least October 31, 2015.

When you purchase an iPad (or any other iOS or OSX device) you receive one year of AppleCare and 90 days of phone support.

You're assumption that the it isn't the latest the product is still correct.

However it could be an iPad 4.

I did a hard reset and iPad came right back. I am going to check my
receipt for date of purchase. My AppleCare said good to 3-2014.
