For one thing, it looks like the traditional American middle class is essentially dead in our cities. Sure, there may be tens of thousands of well-paid young professionals willing to subject themselves to being corporate slaves in return for getting ripped off by landlords, but where will the people who make a city run go? How about the contractors, laborers and service workers? The barflies who add some character and texture to a neighborhood? The bohemian types? Will anyone still work at cafés or bookstores, or drive a cab?

Young men who are paying $30k per year in rent will be pressured to pay even more, to marry and then to assume all of the burdens that family entails. Instead of finding their children growing up around working and middle class kids who are relatively well-behaved and socially mobile, they will find their kids outnumbered by the section 8 children of single mothers and polygamists. They will be hated by their less fortunate neighbors, resented by out-of-towners, and ruthlessly exploited by speculators even as their corporate bosses scheme to replace them with H1-B immigrants.
